[SOLVED] Windows 7 Tiles View Missing

Problem

After fixing my computer that lagging and cpu usage up and down, I noticed that view inside Windows Explorer got changed. The difference clearly noticeable especially on 'Computer' folder. Usually the folder shows the amount of free space of each partition. But it's gone. Turns out the problem is the folder view mode is no longer 'Tile' view as usual, but it changed to 'Extended Tile' view and 'Tile' view option was missing.

I like the 'Tile' view since I can monitor free space on the hard drive easily by displaying graphs, especially which partition contains less or more data. My initial attempt to bring back the 'Tile' view is 'Restore Defaults' at every tab under Folder and search options. Still, the 'Tile' view didn't show up.

Solution

Finally I found a very easy solution on SevenForums.com. Go to this page, download the number "1. To Restore Default Folder Templates for All Folders". It was a bat file, then run it. Clear Print Job Without Rebooting

If you've ever had a print job hang, you're probably familiar with the Windows Print Spooler window. How to Download Youtube Video and Anything

Still confuse on how to download a Youtube video? and anything? Haha. First of all, you must download Free Download Manager (FDM). FDM is a download manager that supports resumable downloads and multiple simultaneous downloads. You can choose between regular FDM or FDM Lite. FDM Lite contain only download manager program without any plugins. Regular FDM includes video conversion plugin, bittorent plugin, uploads plugin and language pack. After download, install it.


Next, open your browser (i.e. Mozilla Firefox). Go to Youtube.com or any web you wish. Right click the video title and click Download with Free Download Manager.

Decide where you want to save downloaded video. OK.

Besides download video, if you download a zip file, FDM gives you option to preview the zip files before download them. Even you don't assign FDM to download something, if you let FDM start on Windows startup, it will take over your downloading action because it is able to monitor any download activities.

You now can download Youtube video directly from the site by clicking on Download MP4 button. Go to My Videos -> Uploaded Videos.

Things To Do After Windows OS Installation

Yesterday we talked about preparation before reinstalling OS, now I'm gonna write things to do first after you finish reinstall Windows. Of course there are some things to do after Windows reinstallation in order that your PC ready to use.

1. Install devices driver
Device driver is a program that allows a specific device, such as a modem, network adapter, or printer, to communicate with the operating system. Although a device might be installed on your system, Windows cannot use the device until you have installed and configured the appropriate driver.

If a device is listed in the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL), a driver is usually included with Windows. Device drivers load automatically (for all enabled devices) when a computer is started, and thereafter run invisibly.

2. Setup network and internet connection
To setup network and internet connection, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Connection > Network Setup Wizard or New Connection Wizard. If you don't a network or internet connection, pass this step and go to next step. I place setup network and internet connection on second place regarding you may want to download newest devices driver and typically you'll need it to update your antivirus definition which we will install it on the third step of this list.

3. Install antivirus and update it
Now you have all driver installed and your network or internet connected. Your computer now should run properly. But without antivirus your computer is vulnerable to virus attack and other malicious software.

Nowadays, there are a lot of antivirus either free or paid antivirus. For free antivirus, you can choose Avira Antivir, AVG Antivirus or other free antivirus. For paid antivirus there are many choices; Norton Antivirus, McAfee, NOD32, Kaspersky, Panda Antivirus etc. The free antivirus not always worse than the paid one. There are many case that the free antivirus works better than paid antivirus. The key is you have to update the antivirus regularly whether it is free or not. FYI, most antivirus need internet connection to update their database, some could be updated manually. Read also the post on how to manual update NOD32 antivirus.

4. Install applications
It is time to install applications. I suggest you to install 'big application' beforehand. Big application means application which the installer has more than 100 mb in size. IMHO, you have to install this first because big application has more complicated configuration and files and a lot of registry entry. So the principle is big first, small later.

5. Restore applications' configuration backup
After installed, for your frequently used application, you sometimes have to customize it to adjust as you need. Than reconfigure one by one, you can restore applications settings from back-up previously made. For MS Office, go to Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Tools > Microsoft Office Save My Settings Wizard. Choose to restore configuration and follow next instruction in the wizard.

How to Install New Device on Windows

Installing a new device, whether it's Plug and Play or non-Plug and Play, typically involves up to three steps:

1. Connecting to your computer.
2. Loading the appropriate device drivers. If your device is Plug and Play, this step may not be necessary.
3. Configuring device properties and settings. If your device is Plug and Play, this step may not be necessary.

Whether your device is Plug and Play or non-Plug and Play, you should follow the device manufacturer's installation instructions to ensure that it functions properly. This may require you to shut down and unplug your computer, and then connect the device to the appropriate port or insert it into the appropriate slot.

If the device does not automatically work, it is non-Plug and Play, or it is a necessary startup device like the hard disk, you may have to restart your computer. Windows then attempts to detect your new device.

If Windows does not successfully find your new hardware, you must use the Add Hardware Wizard in Control Panel to tell Windows what type of device you are installing. The Add Hardware Wizard may ask you to insert media (such as a compact disc or floppy disk) if any were provided with the device. The Add Hardware Wizard is primarily used for installing non-Plug and Play devices.

After Windows detects the device, or you identify the device using the Add Hardware Wizard, Windows tries to find and install the correct driver for the device.

• First, Windows searches for the driver on your computer's hard disk and on the device manufacturer's floppy disk or compact disc, if one is inserted into a disk drive. If the driver is found in either of these places, Windows installs it.
• If Windows doesn't find a driver, and your computer is connected to the Internet, Windows searches for one on the Microsoft Web site. For the latest updates, including security fixes, service packs, new Help files, and device drivers, see Windows Update in Help and Support Center. If the driver is found on the Windows Update site, Windows copies and installs it onto your computer. If your computer is not connected to the Internet, Windows displays a message prompting you to connect to the Internet.
• If Windows cannot find the driver on the Windows Update site, the Found New Hardware Wizard will be displayed and will prompt you to insert any media (such as compact discs or floppy disks) that were provided with the device. If the driver is located there, Windows installs it onto your computer.

Your most valuable property may be in risk. Identity theft-personal information theft to obtain credit or loan money on behalf of other people-is still in progress and the more threatening.

Almost half a million people are victims of this crime every year, and many of them spend time in a quarrel with creditors, banks, financial institutions, and the police in order to repair their good name. Others refer a lawsuit to the court.

Keep your letters safe
If your mailbox is not locked, you mail can be stoleneasily, giving the opportunity for a thief to know your account number and balance, credit card information, new cheque and so on. Think about all the personal information, including insurance policies and all kinds of mail charges, including medical information. Quotes from the credit card on behalf of your name can also become a significant risk if someone pick it up.

The post office box at the post office or the locked mailbox is a way to protect your documents. You also must pay attention to always use the mail box container from the post office for your sent mails - don't put the mails in outbox at your workplace if they are private.

If you do not receive an invoice with the usual time schedule, contact the company. For more guaranteed, consider paying bills via the Internet or online, which have advantage of reducing the receiving and sending mail. However there are some things that must be considered when you are sharing information online, and read carefully to protect yourself.

Protect your documents

Locked Storage file cabinet and the paper shredder is the property that is not useless nowadays. Drawer the workplace or a unprotected file cabinet of personal information could be accessed by irresponsible people, cleaning service, repairman, goods deliverer and the like including those who force to enter your home.

Store all important information, banks accounts and other financial information, check, voucher, letter of insurance, medical information, a debit card that you do not use, passport, old age savings card, birth certificate and the like in a locked safebox.

Do not dispose of the expired banks account, expired debit card, or other important information without destroying the document first. Trash bag lies in the roadside would invite identity theft.

Protect your credit card and debit card

If you carry your wallet in the handbag, you invite a thief anywhere you put it and be a target in store, restaurant or in the workplace. Many of us have much of a credit card than we need and bring everything in the wallet every day. It is wise to reduce the number of cards in the name of you and only carry credit cards or debit cards you need when you exit.

Some hotels reported that a thief entered the hotel room only to steal a card from the wallet, while another cards remain. That means the victim will take longer to realize that they were robbed, giving the thief more time to use stolen card.

If you fill out credit card applications, it should be consistent how you write your name and address-must match with other credit cards.

If you change address, please let all your creditors know much earlier the day when you will move, so there will be no banks account sent to the old address. Close all credit card is unused. Only a slice or cut is not enough. If one of your cards is expired and you do not accept the new one, contact the card issuer company immediately.

To avoid a dead loss of the stolen card, make copy ofaccount number and address information along with contact number of the owner of any company credit card, and store this information in a safe place at home. If credit card is lost or stolen, you already have the required number to contact the company to report the situation.

Do not wait up to one hour to report any lost card. Although the original card was found, your credit card can still be abused, so it is wise to carefully read every credit card bills and report any charges that you do not know.

Protect your PIN

Your PIN number is the largest gift to identity thieves, so it must be well protected, do not print or write PIN in a personal check, and never use for a password. Do not give a PIN number to anyone without a legal reason, and not to be used to identify you unless necessary. Do not take the same number of debit card, driver's license and ID card to be your PIN number.

Protect yourself online

Original anti-virus software (not pirated) is mandatory in every computer (even on Mac), and you must activate them and update periodically, scan for viruses automatically. Avoid sharing program, because the virus can be downloadedtogether with the material that we download.

But this time, even anti-virus protection does not guarantee stored information on your computer. You must also install and always update anti-spyware and firewall software, make sure they are installed for early warning. Also update your internet explorer browser with the latest version (which has been increasingly enhanced security). Many people like the delay to update their browser for fear the ropes will be changed, but it is important to remember that the latest version is usually increase the security.

Set Spam Blocker on "high" will protect your mailbox free from spam emails interference, also from dangerous attachment. You should never open attachments that you have never ask -even though from friend- without previously asking the sender, because some type of virus can take the address book and can transmit and send itself to everyone in the address book.

Your password must consist of a mixture of numbers, symbol, uppercase and lowercase letters. You may think that the name of grandfather-grandmother great-grandparent you will be hard in the broken-down, but the information-and more-personal information can be obtained from a record in government. It is your choice to create a unique password and remember, memorize it well.

When you shop online, see Trust-e symbol or Better Business Bureau online seal, which indicates that it has been in the independent audit and stated trustworthy. Avoid transaction on the Internet at the web site does not provide a privacy policy, you must know how is your information handled.

Finally do not make credit card bills via the Internet unless the site is handled through the secure mode or with a secret code. You will know if the page where you have a secure online form of the URL prefix https instead of http.

Aware to identity theft signs

If anything below happened, the case under suspicious and you should make you take action:

• Do not receive banks account normally.
• Accept credit cards you did not request, or charges from your account you didn't open.
• Find unknown charges from your account, or get phone calls or letters from debt collecting agencies.
• Declined to credit, without a shown cause.
• Find incorrect information or not according to your credit report.

As soon as possible to do this when you lose your credit card, debit card, pension number, SIM Card mobile phone, or the type of identifying information, do following ways:

• Block your credit card, debit card, and block your account at the bank. If the check is stolen, notify your bank.
• Report to police dan keep proof of reporting.
• Contact the state department of motor vehicles, if your driver's license was stolen.
• Contact SIM Card provider to notify them if your mobile phone stolen, and block number.

Changing Google Chrome Theme

Just like Opera which you can change the theme, you can do same thing to Chrome.

1. Download a theme from http://chromespotcom/forumdisplay.php?f=19. Look for a file named default.dll.
2. Open folder C:\Users\[user_name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\Application\0.2.149.29\Themes for Vista. For XP, go to C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\Application.2.1.149.29\Themes.
3. Replace default.dll file in the Themes folder with default.dll you just download.

Disabling Transient Multimon Manager on Vista

In the implementation, Vista serves huge feature by default. One of them is Transient Multimon Manager (TMM). Made for user who works with multidisplay by external monitor for mobile PC and external monitor for PC desktop. And of course, TMM consumes some resources. Reboot Shortcut from Vista to XP

If your PC currently running on Vista, and occasionally use XP frequently, so you need a shortcut to save your time. Of course, this tips only work on dual boot PC, Vista and XP.

Next, we’ll make a shortcut to restart computer (when you run on Vista), and automatically change to XP.

1. Open Notepad
2. Type this command to notepad:  bcdedit /bootsequence {ntldr} /addfirst shutdown /r /t 0
3. Save as batch file, go to File – Save As, name it “Reboot into XP.bat”
4. To get easier access, you may give a desktop shortcut to the file or directly save it on the desktop.

That’s all, now when you are running Vista and need to move to XP quickly, double click the shortcut.

To make a reboot/restart shortcut in XP to XP:

1. Right click on the desktop - New - Shortcut
2. After create shortcut window appear, type this: Shutdown -r -t 0
3. Give the shortcut a name
4. Change the icon if you like to
5. Try double click your new shortcut to reboot

You can modify shutdown command parameters by:

1. Press Win + R to activa Run box
2. Type 'cmd' (without quation), enter
3. Type 'shutdown /?', enter
4. It should show the usage of shutdown command and parameters.

How to remove Ads in Yahoo Messenger

I think it's okay when we get ads from Yahoo! Messenger because we're using their services free. But sometimes you may wanna throw away the ads. 

1. First, exit Yahoo! Messenger. Not only click the X button but really 'exit'.
2. Download a .bat file from here, save it on the desktop or anywhere in you local drive.
3. Double clik the bat file you just downloaded.
4. That's all, now try to launch YM and sign in. It works well on my computer, no more ads.

How to use doPDF

Using doPDF to free create a PDF document is very easy and simple. You can follow steps below:

1. Download the installer (1,42 mb) and install it.
2. When the setup complete, you'll find a new printer driver installed on your Printer and Faxes folder. After the setup process finish, you don't have to configure anything. As I said, doPDF is very simple PDF creator.
3. Open any application you usually use to make a plain document such as MS Word, Excel, Notepad or any other program.
4. Create or open a document you want to make as a pdf document.
5. Whenever you finish the document, go to Print... - choose doPDF v6 from printer name dropdown list - OK.
6. When the process finish, the new PDF document will directly open in your default PDF document viewer such as Adobe Acrobat Reader, Foxit Reader, Sumatera PDF Reader or any other PDF reader.

Because doPDF is very simple, you won't be able to do some other PDF capability e.g. combine PDF files, setting security level, embedding font choice etc. If you need this ability, you may choose another PDF maker.

When I try to make a PDF using doPDF, I didn't find any problem. But, if you meet any trouble when creating PDF using this software, feel free to tell it on comment area.

Increasing Browsing and Downloading speed in Windows Vista

With windows Vista you have noticed the slow internet speed. The web browsing and downloading speed is very slow as compare to previous versions of windows. You can open the same sites in windows XP and server 2003 with the normal speed.

Follow the given steps to increase the Vista browsing speed:

First go to Advance tab in Internet Explorer and turn off the TLS (Transport Layer Security) encryption option. Here to fix problem with some secure pages turn on the SSL 2.0 (Secure Sockets Layer) feature and click Ok button to close it.

Follow the major fix for this problem:

In windows Vista, the TCP autotuning feature is enabled by default. Some web servers do not respond properly to this feature, so it appears that some sites open with very slow speed.

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

1. First click on Start button and type CMD in Run option then press Enter.
2. At Command Prompt, type the following command and press enter.
3. netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel= disabled
4. This command will disable the TCP autotuning feature. Now close the command Prompt and restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.
5. You can easily restore these setting by typing the following command at Command Prompt.
6. netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel= normal
7. Now close the command Prompt and again restart your computer after any changes to go into effect.

Create an Interactive PDF Form

Introduction

Adobe Acrobat Professional allows you to create PDFs that you can send to people by email, having them fill out the form, and then submit it back to you by email. This occurs in a fairly automated way, and allows you to keep track of the results with a spreadsheet sort of method. The instructions below are outlined for use with Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 in combination with a Microsoft Word document which is being used to generate the original form. Another option you will see is to use one of Adobes prebuilt templates

Create Interactive PDF Form

1. Open Acrobat Pro 8
2. Under the Form menu, select Create New From
3. Select Start with an electronic document
4. Press Continue
5. If it shows you a Creating and Distributing FYI, press Continue
6. Press Browse…
7. Change the Files of Type to Microsoft Office Word
8. Locate your file, press Open
9. Press Next
10. Wait for it to Import the document
11. Press Next
12. Select Run Auto Field Detection
13. Press Next
14. Press Done
15. Add the appropriate email address
16. Select to add a print button if you want one
17. Press Finish

Edit/Fine-Tune PDF

18. Select Preview PDF tab
19. Test fields but typing in them, notice the fields might be two high on the line.
20. Go back to Design View tab
21. Select one field at a time and nudge them down with your arrow keys
22. Right-click on form fields, select Rename Object, check to see if you like the names it picked.
23. Save the PDF when you’re done

Distribute PDF

IMPORTANT: Always test on yourself and someone else

24. From Adobe LiveCycle Designer, select File menu, then Distribute Form
25. Select Send now via email
26. Press Ok
27. Enter the Return email address (your email address for now)
28. Press Next
29. Accept the default location for Collect Data in this File
30. Press Next
31. Enter your email address, press enter, and enter another person’s email address that will help you out with testing
32. Press Next
33. Add anything you want for a subject and body of the message
34. Press Done
35. Press Ok

Test PDF

36. Check your email and have your helper check their email
37. Open the attached PDF
38. Fill it out
39. Press the Submit by Email button
40. Press Ok for the appropriate type of email client
41. Press Ok again
42. Close PDF, don’t save

Retrieve Data

43. Check your email for the Returned Form
44. Open the attached PDF
45. Click OK on the Add Complete Form to Data Set (ensure it’s going to the place specified in step 29)
46. Repeat these 3 steps for each returned form
47. You’ll see the results in the upper panel above the PDF
48. Save the Data Set PDF

When you're done testing, you can return to the Adobe LiveCycle Designer, and enter the appropriate list of email address in Step 31.

How to run multiple instance of Yahoo! Messenger

To run multiple instance of Yahoo! Messenger, you need a little tweak:

1. Open regedit.
2. Go to key "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\yahoo\pager\Test".
3. Make a new [dword value] and name it "plural".
4. Enter the key and type "1".
5. Exit, restart computer or log off to apply the change you made.

Now, it is possible to login with different Yahoo id at the same time.

How to round a number to the nearest multiple of significance

Here is the problem:
How to convert this list of number to nearest multiple by 100?



I want to round number by suffix >= 50 --> 100 and <50> 0 and place the result in column B

Here is the solution:

I used 4 functions of MS Excel:

• Value: Converts a text string that represents a number to a number.
• Right: returns the last character or characters in a text string, based on the number of characters you specify.
• Ceiling: Returns number rounded up, away from zero, to the nearest multiple of significance
• Floor: Rounds number down, toward zero, to the nearest multiple of significance.

Result:




I used this function:
Select B1, type the formula below
=IF(VALUE(RIGHT(A1,2))>=50,CEILING(A1,100), FLOOR(A1, 100))




PS: I was using MS Excel 2007, may there are little differences with another version. You may change the number of significance (100) to 10, 50, 25 etc.

How to assign folder as a drive

For your everyday task, you may want to assign a folder as a drive, instead of repartitioning the disk.

• Open Notepad, write this script:

subst [drive letter] [folder address location]

e.g. "subst S: d:\my folder"

1. Save the file as a batch file e.g. "Start.bat" (with quotion marks)
2. Close the file, whenever you want to activate the batch, double click the file.

You can also make a shortcut of the batch file to startup folder so it will start in every system starts.

How to Manual/Offline Update NOD32 Antivirus

For doing manual/offline update, first you must have the update files. You can download it from any server over internet. Here are steps I'm used to do:

1. Start Google and search for phrase 'nod_upd' or click here
2. Select one from the search result with 'Index of /nod_upd' on the title. Pay attention to the url or you may be back to this page.
3. Download anything from the directory with extension *.nup and *.ver. You can use Free Download Manager to download multiple files.
4. Save the downloaded files to usb flashdisk or cd.

Until now, you already have the update files then save them to the computer you want to update.

1. Make a folder named 'nod_upd' (without apostrophes) in one of your harddrive.
2. Copy all updates file you downloaded before to the folder.
3. Select server location from Setup of Automatic Update box in NOD32 Control center. Point to where are your update files located.
4. Try to run update by clicking Update now.

For NOD32 Antivirus version 3 (pictures below), there are little differences to configure manual/offline update.

1. Make a folder named 'nod_upd' in one of your hard drive.
2. Copy all updates file you downloaded before to the folder.
3. Open NOD32 Antivirus main program and press F5 to open Setup.
4. Go to Update below Antivirus and Antispyware section.
5. On Update server click Edit…
6. Define the ‘nod_upd’ folder address in your hard drive (For example: D:\nod_upd), click Add and OK. Click OK again.
7. Run update from Update section by clicking Run virus signature database.
